The eternal mentor of Buddhism on earth
During my decades of closeness to the mentor Yin Gong, I never formally celebrated his birthday to him because he never liked the lively worldly birthday celebrations.I remember when the tutor was 80 years old, the disciples proposed to hold a birthday party for him, but the old man answered with a procrastination and said helplessly: Let’s talk about it until his 100th birthday!Time flies, and more than ten years have passed in a blink of an eye. Now it is the ninth rank, Jin and Liu Songshou, and it is close to the age of 100.Last year, when I was recuperating from Jingsi Jingshu Temple in Hualien, a group of disciples accidentally saw the instructor’s birthday information. They had an idea and made a temporary suggestion, so they took this opportunity to celebrate the 100th birthday of the elderly;Don’t mobilize the troops to reveal the secrets, so as not to waste all previous efforts!By then, the raw rice has been cooked into rice, and the old man has to follow all living beings without a distance.Yes, according to the tutor's ID card age, he was five more years old, which is a hundred years old.You don’t joke, keep your word, and you can’t refuse even if you want to refuse. That day, the monks and lay disciples from Jingsi Hall gathered happily together and sang happy birthday songs. After the elderly were ill, they recovered well and looked energetic. They were amused by their disciples and took a video tape as a souvenir.Unfortunately, I have no blessing to attend this unprecedented grand event, and I feel regretful!
In recent years, I have felt the ruthlessness of time. Weeks, months, and years have been like seconds hands hanging on the wall, moving quickly, and can see clearly with the naked eye.For example, the sun rises from the rising sun to the beautiful sun in the sky, and then falls westward, faster and faster, and before you realize that the sun sets.Life is from youth, middle age, old age, dusk is approaching.Recalling the spring of the 47th year of the Republic of China, Master Xu Ming led all the students of Lingyin to pay their first visit to the instructor in Fuyan: "Everyone bowed three times to the old master together."Old Master" Gui Geng?It was fifty-three years old.Unexpectedly, today, I am seven or eight years older than the "old mage" back then.Buddhism uses the precepts and lambs to sit in the upper and middle parts, and then becomes a monk and receives the full precepts for more than twenty years;A tall and virtuous (Not just horse teeth )It's an elder. In the Chinese Buddhist community, Yin Gong is respected as the tutor, and he has been in full force for a whole year.Speaking of the autumn of the 30th year of the Republic of China, Master Yan Pei invited several classmates to run a Buddhist college at the Fawang Temple in Sichuan. Princess Yan was in charge of academic affairs and hired Duke Yin as his mentor. Until today, Buddhist disciples, whether they become monks or stay at home, elder-level students, young and backward students, or apprentices who were ordained with him, will call him the mentor.
Duke Yin himself described his learning process: 1. Go in secretly, 2. Seek the Dharma and read the collection, 3. Determine the thoughts, 4. Teach according to the circumstances, 5. Practice yourself alone. From this brief narrative, his unique wisdom and great compassion for Buddhism and sentient beings are revealed everywhere.During the period when he was humble to "explorate in secret", he had become seriously concerned about the distance between Buddhism and real Buddhism, so he made a vow: "For the sake of the belief in Buddhism and the pursuit of truth, I am willing to become a monk and go to other places to practice and study. If you practice well in the future, you will preach the pure Buddhist teachings."
Duke Yin said, "There is not enough blessings" and "the pursuit of Buddhism and achievement is limited."In my opinion, this is too modest.Looking at the entire Buddhist world, how many people can have "limited achievements" like him?As for the causes and conditions of blessings, the various causes and conditions since he became a monk - illness, adverse conditions and favorable conditions, are nothing more than making him a "wisdom like the sea" and a "manager on earth", which is a powerful and superior condition.Since he was thirty-six years old, he applied for the role of a tutor at the Dharma King Buddhist Academy. For sixty years, he has been playing the role of a tutor. His attitude towards studying Buddhism, his policy of practicing Buddhism, and his fundamental belief in the complete Buddhism were established during his youth when he was respected as a teacher. The preface of "Speaking All Sarvases and Research on the Masters" published in the 56th year of the Republic of China, the beliefs and views on Buddhism mentioned correctly and completely explains the essence of human Buddhism. For example, the first article: "Buddhism is a religion, and Buddhism is a religion that is not shared by the divine religion. If you study it as a general culture or general divine religion, you will not be able to correctly understand it.Vulgarization and deification will not lead to the prosperity of Buddhism. In Chinese Buddhism, it is generally focused on death and ghosts. Master Taixu specifically reminds Buddhism to treat it as a countermeasure. However, Buddhism is people-oriented and cannot be transformed by nature or deified. Not a ghost sect, not (sky )Only the divine religion, a human Buddhism that is not ghostly or deified, can explain the true meaning of Buddhism."This fundamental belief has been extended all the way from the early work "Buddhism in India", and even the masterpiece "The Origin and Development of Early Mahayana Buddhism" written in my later years. For seventy years, it has been unswervingly and has been implemented throughout the entire world.Establish the right view of human Buddhism, devote all your energy, and devote yourself to the sound of enlightenment in the human world without swaying life and death. And he vows: "In this suffering world for generations, I will practice the Bodhisattva Path for the rest of my life."If this is not achieved right view and has full right practice, how can one achieve this state? The Samantabhadra Vow of "The vows are endless, and my wishes are endless" is manifested in the Bodhisattva practitioner on earth who "study for Buddhism and for sentient beings."
Between listening and thinking and practice
Among the three types of monks that distinguish between "practice", "learning", and "cultivating blessings", that is, old practitioners who practice meditation, chant Buddha's name, and keep precepts;A scholarly monk who studies doctrines, delves into the sutras, and engages in Buddhist cultural education;Serve the people in the temple, promote legal affairs, and make peace of mind to serve the Tao and diligently cultivate blessings.Teacher Yin Gong focused on learning, focusing on listening and thinking among the three wisdoms, and exploring the truth of Buddhism from the sutras, viz.He said that his focus on his practice is on the discussion of the history of Indian Buddhism; The purpose is to "explore the foundation of the sect, understand the changes, and refine it so that the Dharma can become a human-centered Dharma that adapts to the times and is beneficial to the body and mind of mankind."
Chinese Buddhism emphasizes "cultivation and verification", and regards practice and enlightenment as the first meaning, while the knowledge of listening and thinking is regarded as "theory" that has nothing to do with cultivation and verification. This biased concept is obviously inconsistent with the four precursors mentioned by the Buddha - "Get close to good people, listen to the Dharma, think rationally, and follow the Dharma."Ignore the practice of listening and thinking, and blindly talk about practice, preaching and verifying, and how can I ensure that what I practice and verify are in line with the Tathagata's true Dharma? Moreover, the generally recognized practice items do not include chanting Buddha's name, meditation, chanting mantras, chanting sutras, and worshiping; For example, the morning and evening recitations, and even the five homeworks organized by Zen, use the recitation of the Dharma book as the content of practice, how far is the original meaning of "cultivation and verification"?True practice and practical learning should be the Dharma principles of the Tripitaka of the sutras, precepts and treatises, from shallow to deep, from brief to broad, from broad to convention; This is how to learn extensively and learn, carefully think clearly and distinguish, so as to inspire righteous faith, establish correct views, guide correct actions, make your mind pure and your body and mind pure.Isn’t this kind of practice of studying and thinking, the right view and correct practice considered practice? We can’t help but ask: Blind practice, no distinction between gods and Buddhas, no distinction between evil and righteousness, and no distinction between evil and righteousness. The distance between the "cultivation and verification" of Buddhism is more than 84,000?
The practice of chanting scriptures, rituals and repentance is undeniable. Its function is undeniable. The lifeline of Chinese Buddhism has been maintained by sound and Buddhist affairs for nearly a thousand years; The popularization of the method of chanting Buddha's name has formed the scene of Buddhism in Treasure Island today. However, the so-called practice should have a deep meaning that refers to the special practice of meditation. The retreat and living in the mountains advocated by the ancients took meditation as the key to practice, that is, starting from the knowledge of listening and thinking, in order to achieve the wisdom of listening and thinking; Then, we will focus on meditation and practice, so that the dispersed wisdom of listening and thinking can be consistent with concentration and achieve equal cultivation wisdom of concentration and wisdom with the cooperation of meditation. Therefore, in reality, if there is no wisdom of "hearing" and "thinking", it will not be able to "cultivate" wisdom;Lacking the theoretical basis of pure study and thinking, blindly emphasizing cultivation and verification is undoubtedly just a castle in the sky and a dream that will never be realized.
The mentor Yin Gong, some people call him a scholar or a lecturer, but he himself does not recognize it.However, according to the research and achievements of Sanzang, he began with the theory; His works are also mainly about calligraphy, which is of course different from the general preachers who retell the ancient ethics and commentaries, and pick up people's wisdom.Call him a "Buddhist scholar", but not symmetry with "Buddhist scholar";Because he is different from scholars who deviate from Buddhism and study for the sake of research, he is "studying for Buddhism" and does not leave the study of faith, understanding, practice and proof. What is "study for the sake of Buddhism"?What is Buddhism’s meaning? The highest and most universal truth of Buddhism is the three seals of Dharma - all actions are impermanent, all dharmas have no self, and nirvana and tranquility.Impermanence, selflessness, and birth are the methods that Buddhist disciples practice and realize. "Those who think impermanently can establish the thought of selflessness. The holy disciple stays in the thought of selflessness, and his mind is free from self-arrogance, and he attains Nirvana according to his guidance."Yin Gong quoted this holy teaching as a method of theoretical research to achieve the goal of cultivation and verification. The application of impermanence is to "discover the sound development and normal adaptation of the true meaning of Buddhism from the perspective of the evolution of Buddhism."That is, exploring treasures in the vast ocean of fish eyes;Distinguish the difference between the true nature of Buddhism and the deterioration, remove the drought and retain the essence, and use the essence. The law of selflessness is to understand the true face of Buddhism from "self and others' causes", "general and distinction", and "integrated separation".Nirvana is the ultimate truth of the Holy Truth, and the ultimate goal of our people in practicing Buddhism.Duke Yin said: "Any Buddhist scholars should not only understand the true meaning of the words and understand the scholar's own mind, but also understand the impermanence and selflessness of the words and language, and directly reflect nirvana from the words.Since ancient times, many great masters have realized this holy realm of nirvana after reading a sutra and hearing a verse.Like Shariputra's verse of hearing and dependent origination, Huineng's listening to "The mind should be born without dwelling on anything", etc., they can all be realized directly."Writing is empty in nature, which means liberation." It is possible to have a deep understanding of this view, learn more and think more correctly, and when the time comes, it is not difficult to enter directly.Text research is not necessarily a simple learning. This is what researchers should do to study it!"In his eight great Buddhist beliefs, he finally stated clearly: "To study Buddhism history, one should understand the true situation of the past and remember the lessons of the rise and fall of the past. Those who believe in Buddhism should not cherish the glory of the past, but should punish the past and prevent the future from the internal factors that lead to decline? How can you use it as a study of yourself and only for reference?”
From the above quotations, it is enough to prove that practice and study and thinking, theory and practice are two sides of one body;Yin Gong is not only a Buddhist scholar, but also a Buddhist scholar. He is a great good teacher who combines faith and academic knowledge, that is, faith and wisdom. The so-called study of Buddhist history, based on the fundamental topic of Buddhism, is actually exploring the process of life transfer of sentient beings, and thus finding a key way to liberation in life. The process of learning, thinking, and learning and further study is also an indispensable virtue to achieve correct view, correct practice, and correct concentration.Zen is a subject that cannot be ignored when practicing, and the study of listening and thinking is to cultivate correct faith, establish correct views, and possess correct actions. Please miss the holy teachings taught by the World Honored One.
"Miaoyun Gathering" that you can never get tired of reading
The mentor Yin Gong has excellent thoughts, wisdom as the sea, and works as much as one. From the 20th year of the Republic of China, when I first arrived at the Southern Fujian Buddhist College, I wrote "Choose the Three-Time Teaching", "Research on the Common and Disha", and "Comment on Master Shoupei's "Opinions on Reading the Different Theory of the New and Old Translations of Xiangzong" until the publication of the "Author and Translation of the Great Wisdom Theory" in the 81st year of the Republic of China, the writing time took 60 years."Miaoyun Collection" collects works by the old man before he was sixty years old, and is divided into three volumes: the first edition is a lecture on the sutras and treatises, such as "The Prajna Sutra", "The Madhyamaka Sutra", "The Madhyamaka Sutra", and "The Madhyamaka Awakening Faith" in total. The middle edition is an independent and systematic treatise, such as the six volumes of "The Madhyamaka Present Treatise", "Introduction to Buddhism", and "The Way to Become a Buddha".The following chapter is a discussion of general topics, such as "Studying Buddhism with Buddhism", "Three Essentials of Learning Buddhism", "Buddha in the World", etc. eleven volumes. The complete collection is compiled into twenty-four volumes.
The main early works, which were not included in the "Miaoyun Collection", is the book "Indian Buddhism" completed in the 31st year of the Republic of China. Many people in the Buddhist community know that this movie "always organized, represents the evolution of Indian Buddhism and points out the clear standards for choices and trade-offs";It is also a classic work that gives readers some advice. The instructor has not been included in "Miaoyunji", and scholars are not allowed to reprint and circulation. The reason is: "This book is written in classical Chinese, with more narration and less citations. For the history of Buddhism, the genre is very unsuitable... I want to use verbal, cited, and rewritten one."He planned to study and narrate based on five major topics: 1. Buddha and his disciples.2. Collection of holy scriptures.3. The development of Buddhism in the order.4. Talk about all the scriptures and scholars who are mainly engaged in the Sarvastivada.5. Buddhism in sects. The study of these five issues is only the first issue of "The Shravakas are the basis of liberation and return to the same end" of "The Shravakas tend to be diversion of the Shravakas".That is, it is a sectarian Buddhism that is blindly divided by primitive Buddhism and sectarian Buddhism; The future "Mahayana Buddhism" and "secret Mahayana Buddhism" have not been included.Driven by this merciful wish, although he was sick more in his later years, he still insisted on his ambition and tirelessly wrote several works, which was different from the academic masterpieces of "Miaoyunji".Such as "The Integration of Primitive Buddhist Holy Books", "The Study of the Sarvasattvas and the Study of the Scholars of the Sarvas", "The History of Chinese Zen", "The Study of Empty", "The Study of Tathagata Gang", "The Origin and Development of Early Mahayana Buddhism", "The Collection of Miscellaneous Agama Sutras and Treatises", "History of Indian Buddhist Thoughts", etc. These are masterpieces after the age of sixty except "Miaoyunji".In addition, there are also some works and lectures on sutras and treatises, such as "The Verses of the Sutras and Verses Asked by King Kinnara of the Great Tree", "The Verses of the Pure Land of Rebirth", "The Verses of the Distinguishing the Dharma and the Nature of the Dharma", and "Practicing Stomatology ──Cultivate the mind and only the mind
#8231;Chapters such as Secret Vehicle, "Human Buddhism with Conformity and Opportunity", "Sixty Years of Traveling in the Heart of the Fahai", "The Way of Convenience", and "Chinese Buddhist Trivial Talks", etc., are compiled into five volumes of "Huayu Collection".
The works of Master Yin Gong are most widely circulated in "Miaoyunji". Any intellectual who wants to understand Buddhism correctly and deeply and extensively does not read "Miaoyunji".Because this is a concentrated and concise Tripitaka. To understand the fundamental saints of primitive Buddhism, "Introduction to Buddhism" (Original name Ah Han talks about )A book is clear and easy to interpret. The thoughts on the three systems of Mahayana Buddhism, the first compilation of sutras and treatises, the middle compilation of independent treatises, and even the articles collected in the second compilation, such as "The Three Essentials of Learning Buddhism" and "The Buddha in the World", are all Buddhist treasures that are endless to read and enjoy endless benefits.
It is worth mentioning again that the "way to become a Buddha" is a systematic guide for the steps of learning Buddhism and the steps of practicing from shallow to deep, and not only students of the Buddhist college, but also all disciples of the Three Jewels should be included in the compulsory courses.I remember that the book has not been published yet and began to be published in "Haichaoyin". Master Xu Ming, who is in charge of academic affairs at Lingyin Buddhist College in Taiwan, was ordered as a course for the second academic year.It is stipulated that students should recite "verses" and read "long journeys" carefully. The content is like the sea, and the deeper it becomes. It reaches a long section of Prajna of the Six Paramitas and the idea of choosing the three Mahayana systems, which is not something that the monks at that time can understand. However, due to the causes and conditions of learning in my youth, I have a correct grasp of the organization and integration of the entire Buddhist teachings and will not fall into paranoid sect prejudice, which will be of great benefit to my future Buddhist teachings. The three ladders of Buddhism (Sanshidao ),For example, the three goals of life: the cause and effect of human and heavenly beings who cultivate the three blessings are the short-term goals;Practicing the Four Noble Truths is the mid-range goal;Taking the three minds and six perfections as the ultimate goal of the distance. If you study Buddhism, do not forget your original intention and move towards the great way to become a Buddha, you will not let go of this treasure mountain journey and will be able to repay the great kindness of the Three Jewels.
