No distinction

When our eyes see a teacup and think it is a teacup, it is no longer simply the eye consciousness that produces its effects, but enters the category of consciousness;When we feel that a teacup is good or bad, we are also consciously making judgments.In terms of time, the eye consciousness can only understand the current state;In terms of space, you can only understand the state in front of you, and it does not contain famous sayings.Therefore, in Buddhism, eye consciousness is called the present consciousness, which is the "precise situation of condition".

All the thinking activities we can feel now belong to the role of consciousness.In addition to the direct perception, consciousness also has comparison and non-quantity, which is what we usually call judgment and reasoning.Of course, our judgments are correct and wrong. The correct judgment is a proportional quantity, and the wrong judgment is non-quantity.

The formation of outlook on life and worldview also depends on the role of the sixth consciousness.When we study Buddhism and practice, we must re-understand and think about the world.Many of our existing understandings are incomplete and are derived from our limited experience.Then, the resulting outlook on life and world will undoubtedly have many deviations or even fundamental mistakes.Therefore, we must observe, understand and analyze the world in the correct way through listening and thinking of the scriptures.In the practice of the Yogacara school, there are four kinds of true wisdom. Only after reasonable thinking can we reach a true understanding of the world and further establish a correct outlook on life.

Therefore, Buddhist practice should start with discrimination rather than non-discrimination.When many people first learned Buddhism, they saw two Zen cases and had no difference.But if we don’t distinguish at the beginning, we can only live in wrong ideas forever. When we have not yet distinguished right from wrong, the so-called practice can only go in the opposite direction.Therefore, we must first distinguish. After having a correct understanding of the world, we can further practice cessation and contemplation, so that we can achieve the wisdom of non-discrimination.When we feel difficult to practice contemplation, we must come out of the contemplation and make further distinctions to confirm the state we know.

In addition to having the role of cognition, consciousness can also control our behavior. Whether it is to create good or bad karma, it is mainly carried out under its instructions.Therefore, the entire practice process is based on consciousness.If mistakes are the root of greed, anger and ignorance, then correct distinction is the basis for developing wisdom.
