Master Zhengyan: Is it effective?

Greed and long for the "cause" of poverty in life, and without desire in your heart, you will be far away from the bitter fruit of unrequited desire.

There is a village in Japan, with high mountains to the east and a wide plain to the west.

One day, an old man suddenly came to this village, carrying a Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva in front and a Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva behind him.He asked and answered, "Do you know how old I am? I am already 330 years old, and I have been carrying these two Bodhisattvas for more than 200 years..."

As my father walked, he said to everyone: 'I want to find a place for these two Ksitigarbha Bodhisattvas to worship. These two Ksitigarbha Bodhisattvas, one is a valid Bodhisattva, and they will respond to any request; the other is an ineffective Bodhisattva, and no matter what you ask for, they will not respond.'He also said: 'I will place the ineffective Bodhisattva on the wide flat ground and pave a road so that it is easy for those who come to worship to walk; in addition, worship the effective Bodhisattva on the rarely visited mountains, because he is very effective, so no matter how difficult or dangerous the road is, there will definitely be people going to worship.'

As a result, although the ineffective Bodhisattva was worshipped on a flat and easy-to-go road, few people went to worship; while the Bodhisattva worshipped on the mountain was a constant stream of people coming to worship, causing the path that was originally surrounded by vines and covered with wild grass to be walked out of a way by the villagers soon.Because this Bodhisattva is very effective, the villagers seek health and wealth, and everyone can taste everything they want, so the incense is so prosperous.

After two or three decades, the people in the village have become rich and healthy. Some people began to think: 'Life like this is too comfortable and boring, unless I am richer than others.'So many people thought to themselves: 'If I want to be richer than others, I have to make others poor and sick!' So everyone cursed each other, hoping that their neighbors would suffer from poverty and illness, and these curses came true one by one.

Twenty years later, the village returned to the poverty situation fifty years ago, and it was even more miserable than the poverty of fifty years ago.Because fifty years ago, everyone was at peace and worked hard, but later because the Bodhisattva responded to his requests, everyone got rich overnight and lived a wealthy life, so they developed the habit of not doing anything or not doing anything. Now even the skills to make a living have been almost lost, and the villagers cursed each other and their lives were poor and hard.

A hundred years later, an old man who carries two Bodhisattvas and appears again. When the old man comes to the village, he says: "There is a valid Bodhisattva not necessarily beneficial to people, because if everyone is greedy, it will often harm people; the greedy thought that harms people is the most effective and poor, and this is the "cause" of poverty! Now you should worship the uneffective Bodhisattva with a sincere heart. Although he has no response, it is harmless to people! You must cultivate faith with a normal heart, so that is it.'

Since no one has paid homage to the ineffective Bodhisattva for a hundred years, the road has long been overgrown with weeds, and the old man finally found him out. From then on, the villagers no longer ran to the mountains. They worshipped the ineffective Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva on the plain. Because they did not ask for whether it was effective, everyone worshiped with a sincere and undesirable mind, no longer greedy, and rely on their own strength to work hard in life, and finally their life gradually turned around.

After many years, the village returned to its previous well-off life. Although it was not very rich, it was able to cooperate diligently, respect each other, live with a pure heart, and live a peaceful and comfortable life.

Some people always seek endlessly, and sometimes they want to be richer; they are afraid that they are not outstanding enough, so they try their best to become richer, and even curse and infringe on others. To reveal oneself through this, this is the fault of ordinary people’s mind.

In fact, it is better to seek Buddha than to seek it. Do your duty with a normal mind and do everything seriously. You will surely achieve something in the future. You must also have a "nothing to ask for". If you want something in your heart, you will have troubles. Only by being content can you be happy!
