Editor's note: Today's story comes from the "Miscellaneous Treasure Sutra", and the original title is "The ugly girl of King Persenathian, Lai Tiyuan."The "Buddha's Sutra on the Differentiation of Karma" mentions that ten kinds of evil deeds make people ugly in the next life. One of them is "not respectful to the wise and sages", and the other is "those who see the ugly will destroy the evil and despise the evil." Princess Laiti is the best example. Because of her defamation and scolding the sages in her previous life, she has become ugly in this life and is afraid of others.

Once upon a time, King Bosnag had a daughter named Lait, who was very ugly. In total, there were eighteen ugly places, which were so ugly that they were not as ugly as humans. Everyone who saw her was very scared.

Princess Laiti reached the age when she was time to get married. The king sent someone to find a suitable candidate in the country and gave a special explanation: she was a child of a nobleman surnamed Qian, but now she is in poverty.The king and envoy looked for a long time and finally found a noble child in the corner of the market. He was lonely and poor and relied on begging to make a living. The envoy brought this poor noble child to the king.

The king brought this person to the back garden and told the young man: "I have a daughter who is ugly and cannot meet people. Now I want her to be your wife, I wonder if I want to?”

The poor noble child replied: "King!This is your order. Even if it is a dog, I dare not refuse, let alone a princess. What's wrong with it?”

The king betrothed the princess to him and built a palace for them. He warned the princess: "My daughter looks ugly and must not be seen by others.From now on, you must lock the door when you go out. Remember to close the door when you come back. Never let others see her!”

The children of nobles often gathered together to drink and have fun. Every time they gathered, the children of other nobles would bring their wives, but the king's daughter never attended.So everyone agreed that when the party is again in a few days, everyone will have to take their wives, and anyone who doesn’t come will be punished heavily.When we got together again, the king's daughter still did not come as before.So everyone, as agreed, asked the prince-consort to fine a sum of money. The prince-consort had no choice but to obey and accept the punishment.Everyone agreed again that if they don’t take their wife at the next day, they will also be punished.In this way, the prince-consort was punished many times and never took his wife to the party.

When the prince-consort returned home, he said to his wife: "I have been fined a lot of money by everyone several times."When the wife asked why, the husband had no choice but to explain: "Everyone has an agreement that they should take their wife with them when they are drinking and having fun, but the king has an order that others cannot see you, and I have been fined many times.”

After hearing this, my wife was very ashamed and deeply blamed herself, so she chanted Buddha's name day and night.A few days later, everyone got together as usual and her husband went there alone again.My wife repents more earnestly at home and vows to say, "The Tathagata is born and can benefit sentient beings. I am a person with deep sins, so I cannot receive the blessings!"Because Lai was moved by sincerity, the Buddha jumped out of the earth.Laiti was the first to see Buddha's hair, and he felt happy and respectful, and her own hair immediately became very beautiful.Then I saw the Buddha's forehead, and then I saw the Buddha's eyebrows, eyes, ears, nose, mouth and even the whole body.Laiti gradually saw the whole picture of the Buddha, and her heart became more and more happy and respectful, and her body was changing as well. All the ugliness were gone, and she became dignified and beautiful like a celestial girl.

At this time, the nobles gathered quietly to discuss that the king's daughter did not come to the party. There are only two reasons: either dignified and beautiful than ordinary people, or they are extremely ugly and difficult to see.We got her husband drunk today, then took off his keys and went to his house to open the door to see what happened.So everyone got the prince consort drunk, took off the key, and went to the prince consort's house together.When everyone opened the door, they saw that the king's daughter was unparalleled, so they closed the door and returned to the party place.At that time, the prince-consort still didn't wake up, so everyone returned the key to the prince-consort and tied it under his waist.

After the prince-consin woke up, he returned home and opened the door and saw a beautiful woman. He asked strangely: "Where are you from the fairy? Why did you come to my house?"The wife replied, "I am your wife, Raiti!"The prince-consort was very surprised and asked his wife why she became so beautiful. The wife replied, "I heard that you were punished for me many times of gatherings. She felt very ashamed, so she chanted the Buddha's name sincerely. Later, when she saw the Buddha jumping out of the earth and saw the Buddha's image, she felt happy, so her body and appearance became beautiful.”

After hearing this, the prince-consort was very happy and went to pay homage to the king and told the king that Laiti had become beautiful and dignified, hoping to see the king.The king was also very happy after hearing this, so he summoned them. After meeting them, he was very happy, but he also felt incredible, so he went to pay homage to the Buddha and asked the Buddha for advice: "World-Honored One!What kind of cause and effect did my daughter be born in the king's family, but she is ugly and frightened?What is the reason why it suddenly becomes dignified and beautiful today?”

The Buddha told the king about the causes and conditions of the princess’s previous life: “In the past life, there was a Pratyekabuddha who went out to beg for food every day.One day, he walked to an elder's door. The elder's daughter gave food to the Pratyekabuddha. Seeing that the Pratyekabuddha's body was crude and ugly, he said casually: 'This person is really ugly, with rough skin like fish skin and hair like a ponytail.'The elder daughter at that time was the daughter of yours in this life, and she was born in the king's house in this life because she gave food to the Pratyekabuddha.But because of the rebuke of the Pratyekabuddha, the body looks very ugly.Later, because of my shame and sincerity, I was able to see me, and because of my joy, my body and appearance became dignified and beautiful.”

At this time, everyone heard the Buddha talk about Laiti's previous life's cause and effect, and they all respectfully bowed and followed it happily.
