Gama Rinpoche: Initiation and the Oath of Mandala

The initiation originated from the throne-passing ceremony in ancient India. When the prince wants to inherit the throne, he needs to take the water from the four seas to gather in the vase and wash the crown prince's head. After this ceremony, the prince officially becomes the king and can then take charge of the power of the entire country. This is the original meaning of the initiation, which is a ceremony for the prince to ascend the throne to become the king. \

Nowadays, many people think that "initiation" is the monk pouring some water on people's heads, touching them with his hands, and putting Buddha statues on his head.In fact, in Buddhism, empowerment is used as a metaphor to indicate that those who receive empowerment will officially obtain the inheritance of Buddhism and will attain the fruit of Buddha.Initiation is a kind of authorization, which is a primitive master who has passed on the lineage to grant the power to convert disciples to practice a certain method.

When practicing Tantric Buddhism, the master will first give the disciples the teaching of giving up cause and effect, then the initiation, and finally the oral teaching. Only if the master with these three kindnesses can he be called the disciple's root master.The so-called initiation in Tantra can transform our ordinary body into the body of a Buddha, convert the language of an ordinary person into the language of a Buddha, and convert the heart of an ordinary person into the heart of a Buddha.During the initiation, any magic weapon that the disciples come into contact with has profound secret meanings, which is crucial to the achievements of the disciples who convert.

In fact, we usually don’t like it or dare to give initiation, and we will also be worried when giving initiation, because it is an extremely special sacred ritual that involves the oath of the mandala.I remember when we first asked the old master for the initiation of Vajrasattva, we had been practicing in Tagong for many years. At that time, the old master only selected some of his disciples to receive the initiation.This is not a question of compassion or not. It is very difficult for disciples to truly have the conditions for initiation.However, in the pollution of the five turbidities and evil worlds, everyone has the urgent need to practice the Vajrasattva method. The disciples have prayed many times. The old master has also given permission and promised many times, and even advised us: "If you don't want to be empowered, who will empowered us in the future?"So, we can receive the pure and precious initiation of inheritance.

Once upon a time, when the Buddha and Padmasambhava and others gave their disciples the initiation, many people immediately realized emptiness and achieved success.Now we are all ordinary people in the turbid world, greed, anger, ignorance, jealousy, arrogance, suspicion, etc., which are full of our body, speech, and mind.After the initiation, it is impossible to immediately transform the body into the Buddha's body solemn, and every thought can be transformed into the Buddha's mind. It is impossible. Our karma is too deep.However, we must pay attention to and cherish the initiation. Don’t think that this is just a simple ceremony. It contains the blessings and acceptances of masters and Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of all generations. It is extremely precious and is a very important link in the pure and extraordinary Dharma lineage.

Especially when receiving initiation under the same mandala, senior brothers and sisters must be harmonious and united, respect and care for each other.Tibetan Buddhism attaches great importance to the "big brother" system. When the master is here, everyone can express their opinions at will;The master is gone, and you should respect the senior brother just like respecting the master.Therefore, no matter how fierce the debate is, we should pick on each other's faults and tease each other, but remember to respect and care for each other. This kind of friendship sometimes far exceeds that of our own family.Because in this life, the family members either collect or pay back the debt may only be in this life;Vajra Brothers and Sisters are our true relatives who have been accompanied us until we become Buddhas.The Vajra Brothers and Sisters under the same mandala will be inseparable and never separate until they become Buddhas.

Many disciples can feel the deep friendship with their senior brothers and sisters. This friendship is very important to each other. Some people fall into the hell, the hungry ghosts, and the animal realm. The senior brothers and sisters will find ways to rescue him from it;If we are separated from each other in the world, we will find each other back because of the extraordinary Dharma conditions.We will not be separated, and the brothers and sisters in a mandala will definitely be reunited.

Some disciples have malicious intentions towards their senior brothers and sisters, and even have their hearts full of hatred, jealousy, arrogance, suspicion, etc. towards certain Vajra senior brothers and sisters. When faced with their kind words, they spoke rudely and sarcastically, and not only did they not listen to them, but they spoke ill of each other;Some of them instigate disagreement and destroy harmony between senior brothers and sisters.If this is the case, you will soon be reincarnated into the Avici Hell, without any obstacles, without the bardo, and fall directly. What a terrible thing.Think carefully, is your body, speech and mind worthy of your senior brothers and sisters who love us?

When we use Vajrasattva Buddha as the basis for our practice, we sincerely repent that even a little dissatisfaction with Vajra Senior Brothers and Sisters in our hearts will be saved.Practice the Hundred Characters of Vajrasattva in accordance with the Dharma, be pure every day and never create again. Wash your mind a hundred thousand times and you can always clean it.After receiving precious initiation, we must pay attention to the oath of the Mandala, repent well, cherish the opportunity to reunite with the Vajra Senior Brothers and Sisters in this life, care for, care for, encourage and accompany each other, and pray for each other's blessings and wisdom to grow rapidly and achieve Bodhi early.
