Zen Master Yixing: The Past White Cloud: 60. The Sorrow of Lu Zi’s Lady

60.The sadness of the mother of deer and son

After leaving Banadiga, the Buddha went to Nalanda first, and then went to a big city in Yangga, Zhanbo.Yangga is a large population and fertile land under the jurisdiction of King Bimbisara. When the Buddha was there, he lived in a forest by the Ghakala Lake full of fragrant lotus flowers.

Many people come here especially to listen to the Buddha's teachings.Among them is a young and rich Brahmin named Suna Chanda. In this area, Suna Changda's intelligence is admired by people. Some of his friends once advised him not to worship Buddha. They thought that doing so would give this Shaxing Giotamo too much face. But Suna Changda told him kindly that Yu'er would not easily miss getting to know someone with extraordinary depth like Buddha. He thinks this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

I need to expand my experience, Suna Changda said.I need to know that Shaxing Gottamo is superior to me in that aspect, and I myself surpass him in that aspect.

Hundreds of Brahmins decided to join the ranks of Suna Chanda. They walked to Lake Gala together and were full of confidence in Yunazhada. They are sure that he will let his family see the transcendence of the Brahmin doctrine of Betha.Their county believes that Sunazainda will not humiliate their class sects.

Facing the Buddha who had been surrounded by the group, Suna Zhada was stunned for a while, not knowing what to say.Seeing this, in order to avoid his embarrassment, the Buddha said first: Sunazada, can you tell us what is the prerequisite for a true Brahmin? If necessary, please quote the Veda as a proof.

Sunada was very happy.Veda is his specialty. He said: Shaxing Gottama, a tangible Brahmin, should meet five conditions: handsome and upright appearance, reciting and sacrificing rituals, pure bloodlines can be traced back to seven generations, and virtuous behavior and wisdom.

The Buddha asked: Among these five conditions, which one is most valued? If one is missing, it will still be considered a true Brahmin?

After thinking for a while, Suna Changda explained that the last two conditions are truly indispensable.Appearance, excellence in rituals, and pure earning with anti-bloodlines are not absolutely necessary. Those five hundred Brahmins were unhappy when they heard the response from La Nazhada. They all raised their hands and waved them to express disagreement with him. They believed that he was shaken by the Buddha's interrogation. They thought his reaction really made the Brahmin lose his eyelids.

The Buddha turned around and said to them: Dear guests! If you have confidence in Suna Zangda, please keep calm and let him continue. If you have no confidence in him.So please call him back to your seat so that I can continue to discuss with one of you.

Everyone fell silent.Sunazaonda looked at the Buddha and said: Shaxing Gottamo, please allow me to say a few words to my friends.

Sunazaonda turned his head and pointed at a young man who was sitting in front of them.He said: Have you all seen my cousin Yangga? He is a handsome young man with wine.He was afraid of his manners being gentle and elegant.Apart from Shaxing Gottamo, few people can compare with: his appearance.Yangga was also very proficient in Vedas and was very familiar with the various rituals of sacrifice. His pure blood can be traced back to seven generations from both parents.I believe no one can doubt his three conditions. But if Yangjiajia was a drunkard who raped, killed, robbed, and cheated. At that time, what is the value of his handsome face, ritual skills and pure bloodline? Good friends, we must admit that virtue and wisdom are the most necessary conditions for a Brahmin. This is the truth of everyone, not just from Shaxing Gottamo.

The crowd applauded warmly. After the applause stopped, the Buddha asked Suna Cangda again: Is there any more important thing about both virtuous and wise?

Sunazaonda replied: Sarmon Gottamo, virtue comes from wisdom, but wisdom is fearful and dependent on virtue of virtue. Both of them are inseparable. It's like washing the other with one hand, or scratching the other with one foot.Virtue and wisdom grow and nurture each other.Virtue makes wisdom appear.Wisdom makes behavior more virtuous. Both of these qualities are most precious in life.

The Buddha responded: Very good, Suna Changda! You have expressed the true meaning.Virtue and wisdom are indeed the treasures in life. Can you say it again? How can we bring virtue and wisdom to the highest level?

Sunazada smiled and closed her palms. He bowed to the Buddha and said: Master, please give us guidance.Although we know these principles, you are the one who proves the truth of the Great Way.Please tell us how to exert virtuousness and wisdom to the highest level.

The Buddha preached to them the way to liberation. He told them the first precepts, concentration and wisdom of enlightenment.Keeping precepts brings concentration. Will surely produce wisdom.Huineng allows us to keep the precepts more deeply. The deeper you keep the precepts, the longer your concentration.Deep meditation can inspire higher wisdom. The Buddha also explained how to observe the mutual generation of causes and conditions to break the false view of permanence and independent individuals.Visualizing the origin of dependent origination can help us eliminate greed, anger, and ignorance, and thus achieve liberation, peace, and joy.

Sunazaonda was fascinated by the fact that he listened to it.After the Buddha finished speaking, Suna Zhada stood up and closed his palms. He said: Master Gotham, please accept my thanks. You have brought me back to light today and led me out of darkness. Please let me take refuge in Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. At the same time, I hope you and the monks will come to my house tomorrow and ask me to offer you.

The sincere exchange between Buddha and Sunazada on this day caused a shocking fusion among all classes in this area.A group of Brahmin intellectuals all followed the Buddha as their teacher. These include the famous Brahmin Amoga in Lichenangana village and his teacher Bugalasati. As the number of Brahmins converted to the Buddha's sect increased day by day, some Brahmins and other religious leaders were inevitably jealous of evil.

When they were still missing Banadiga, Fusidi asked Venerable Maudgalyayana for advice on different religious movements at that time.Maudgalyayana summarized all the sects for him.

First of all, there is the sect of Puruna Kashyapa. His disciples were not moral and ethical. They insist that good and bad are just concepts caused by traditional habits.

The believers of Mogaliqusheli are fatalists. They believe that what happens in their lives is inherently destined rather than personal changes. To be liberated after one thousand or five hundred years is also destined early in the morning and has nothing to do with his own efforts and practice.

What Ajid Zhiqin Brah teaches is hedonism. He believed that man was made up of four elements: earth, water, fire, wind, that is, and once he died, he had nothing. Therefore, he believed that he should try his best to experience the enjoyment of the world in his lifetime.

The sect led by Karakutuo Kasyapa, who has just held the opposite view and belongs to the sensation theory of no cause. They believe that a person's body and soul are never disillusioned. They believe that human beings are formed by seven elements - earth, water, fire, wind, air, bitterness, and soul as independent elements.Life and death are just short-term phenomena caused by the dispersion and gathering of elements on the surface.

Both Sariputra and Maudgalyayana were once part of the sect of Dejay Viratizi. What Pujaye teaches is the truth in one situation, but it may not be true in another situation.A person's examination of environmental things is the best measure.

A group of people led by Nichrondharutis are ascetics who practice differently. They do not wear clothes, and they strictly observe the precept of not killing all sentient beings. What Nichttorati taught is a double fatalism. He believes that there are two basic forces in the universe, life and non-life.This sect was very respected at the time and therefore had a great influence in society. The monks often have contact with Jain ascetics because they all respect life the same way.But they also had many differences at the same time, which led to frequent conflicts between some monks and some disciples of Jainism.Venerable Maudgalyayana particularly opposed this sect's asceticism and directly criticized them for being too extreme. Therefore, Maudgalyayana became the target of these tarots.

After the Buddha returned to the city of Sarvas, he lived in the East Garden. His visitors are endless. One morning, Mrs. Lu Zi’s wife came to visit. When the Buddha saw that her clothes were wet all over her body, he asked her: Luzi, where did you go? Why did your clothes be wet?

Mrs. Lu Zi's mother cried and said: World-Honored One, my grandson just died.I wanted to come to see you, but I forgot to bring the umbrella.

Lu Zi, how old is your grandson? Why did he die?

The World Honored One, who was only three years old, died of typhoid fever.

Poor kid.Deer and Zi, how many children and grandchildren do you have?

World Honored One, I have sixteen children.Nine are married.I have eight grandchildren. Now there are only seven left.

Luzi, do you like to have so many grandchildren?

Of course, the World Honored One.The more the better. If their number was as numerous as that in the city of Shravas, I would not know how happy it would be.

Deer and Child, do you know how many people die in Schaeve every day?

The World Honored One sometimes has nine to ten, but at least one is available every day..In Schaeve, no one dies in a day.

Deer and child, if your grandchildren are as many as those in Schaeve, wouldn’t your hair and clothes be wet every day?

The deer and son clasped their hands together.I see!I really shouldn't want to have a grandson with a large population in Schaeve. The more you care about a person, the more painful it will be.You teach me this way, but somehow, I always forget.

The Buddha smiled softly.

Lu Zi's mother told him: World-Honored One, you always returned here before Erji. All other times of the year, your disciples miss you very much.Without you, we would find it boring to come to the monastery. We don’t know what to do, we usually just walk around your house and go home.

Buddha said: Deer and child mother, it is more important to practice the Dharma diligently than to visit the monastery. Moreover, when you come to the monastery, there must be other venerables preaching. You can ask them for instructions on the practice. There is no difference between Dharma teachings and mentors. Please don’t let your practice be ruined just because I’m not here.

Venerable Ananda, who was standing next to him, made an idea.Planting a Bodhi tree here should help.In this way, when believers come, they can replace your position with this Bodhi tree. They can even bow to it to symbolize bowing to you.We can also build a stone platform under the tree to make an altar so that believers can offer flowers. They can walk around the tree and visualize the Buddha.

Mrs. Lu Zimu said: This is a great idea! But where did you find a Bodhi tree?

Ananda's answer: I can get the seeds of the Bodhi tree from the enlightenment of Youloupinluo Buddha.Don't worry, I will get the seeds, plant them until they sprout, and then plant them into big trees.

Mrs. Lu Zi felt a little lighter and more comforting. After she bowed to the Buddha and Venerable Ananda, she went home.
