Khenpo Dazhen: Will you continue to sweep the snow?

Khenpo Dazhen: Will you continue to sweep the snow?

Dazhen Khenpo taught at the first college student experience camp in 2015

Question: I bow to the master! There is a story: In a village, it has been snowing all the time, and the roads are blocked by snow. A villager in the village comes out to sweep the snow every day. After a while, the villagers in the village think he should go and sweep it.One day, the villager did not go to sweep the snow, and at this time, everyone in the village went to accuse him of why he didn't go to sweep the snow.If you are the accused villager, how should you face the accusations from the villagers? Will you continue to sweep the snow?

Rinpoche: When we do anything, it mainly depends on our own intentions. What kind of mentality do you use to sweep the snow? Is it for everyone's convenience, or can you accumulate some good roots for yourself? Some people may have good intentions and do such things for everyone's convenience, which is also a kind of kindness. Some people do this to accumulate some good roots. What we mainly emphasize is the intention. You must be determined by yourself and do whatever you do, and not passively.

If you passively do things, there is no merit; only by taking the initiative can you have merit.

The world talks about "dreams", and we talk about "making aspiration", and making aspiration is dreams. There are many kinds of dreams: big, small, and ultimate, and temporary.During the process of doing it, even if others don’t understand and bring a lot of pressure to yourself, you still have to accept it. It is best to accept it calmly. The reason why I do this is because I have my own intentions and just do it, not to get the other party’s recognition and reward.

Many people in the world have this idea: I do good deeds with kindness, but I don’t have good rewards. This is because you don’t know how to be determined, and your intention is not pure and kind enough. As a Mahayana Buddhist student, there is no requirement for anything you do, and no reward for doing it.As long as it is beneficial to everyone and helpful to everyone, we will do it, but it is within our ability. We cannot bring pressure to ourselves at the same time or obstacles to ourselves at the same time. This should be avoided.
