There is a Erzu Temple in the south mountain of Shaolin Temple. There are four wells of bitter, spicy, sour and sweet in the courtyard of the temple.Not far from the Second Zu Temple, there is another big stone called the Demon Refining Platform, also called the Heart-Search Platform and the Armour-Shanghai Platform.These are all left by the first ancestor of Zen Buddhism, Bodhidharma and the second ancestor Huike.

According to legend, after the divine light stood on the snow and broke his arm and obtained the Huike Dharma name, he followed the decree of Zen Master Bodhidharma to go to the Nanshan Mountain to recuperate the wounded, refine the demons, and find the heart.When I got up, there was heavy snow covering the sky and the northwest wind blew over the mountains and rocks, and the wind and snow were mixed! The mountains and rivers were covered with snow, so how could there be a way? My disciple Juexing supported the divine light and walked with difficulty, leaving deep footprints on the snow-white earth.They broke through the evil tide, climbed up the Ladder Grotto, and walked for more than half a day before they arrived at a small field.The master and apprentice took off their ring knives and chopped wooden sticks, cut yellow grass, and built a small thatched treasure to live inside.Two days later, the clouds scattered and the sun rose and the sky cleared. They also found a large flat stone in the southwest of the field.Juexing said: Master, look at how flat this stone is. From now on, you will sit here and cleanse your heart and recuperate your wounds. I will bring you tea and meals on time! Huike also felt that the stone was very commendable, so he agreed.From this day on, Huike sat on this stone every day to recover from his injuries and meditate. He was so happy that he could deliver tea and meals on time.

In a flash, Zen Master Bodhidharma went up the mountain to visit Huike with a Zen stick.He saw that Huike had already meditated on the big stone and entered into meditation despite the pain.He stood next to the stone for a long time, but Huike was completely unaware of it.When Huike finished meditation, he realized that it was the master who had arrived, so he hurriedly came down to let Bodhidharma into the Cao'an.Zen Master Bodhidharma asked: Huike, your injury must still hurt very much, right? Huike replied: It doesn’t hurt.Zen Master Bodhidharma said: How can one arm be cut off with a knife without hurting it? Bodhidharma asked this, in fact, intentionally testing Huike's heart.Huike said: After the disciple came here, he focused on his heart and did not feel the pain in his heart, so of course his arms would not feel the pain.Zen Master Bodhidharma nodded with satisfaction and asked: What are you two missing here? Huike did not understand the meaning and did not answer.Bodhidharma asked again: Is there any water here? Juexing said: No.Zen Master Bodhidharma walked out of the temple with a Zen stick.He looked here, there, and then chose the place, pierced the Zen stick to the ground, and with a puff, a stream of spring water surged out of the ground.Huike saw the Zen Master Zhuo Xichengquan, and hurriedly bowed and said, "Thank you for giving water to Master!" Bodhidharma said, "When you two eat the water in the well, I will come again."After saying that, he went down the mountain.After Bodhidharma left, Huike tasted the spring water and it was bitter. He knew in his heart that this was Zen Master Bodhidharma continuing to test himself, so he didn't say anything.Juexing tasted it and said that the water was bitter and could not be eaten, so he had to go down the mountain to carry the water.Huike stopped him and said: The old Zen master Zhuo Xide Spring is the most delicious.Juexing couldn't stand it, so he had to follow Huike to eat water.

After 4728 days, Kushuijing was eaten by Huike and Juexing.Zen Master Bodhidharma came up the mountain for the second time.Bodhidharma asked Huike: Is the water in this well delicious? Before Huike could speak, Juexing answered first: How bitter is this water! Bodhidharma asked Huike again: Do you think the water is bitter when you eat it? Huike did not answer positively: Master, the scriptures do not say that the sea of ​​suffering is boundless, is it the shore when you turn back? When Bodhidharma heard this, he felt that Huike had answered well, so he changed the topic and said: The water in this well has dried up, and I will take a look at you again.After saying that, he picked up his Zen stick and lit a hole in the ground, and the spring water came out with the Zen stick.Bodhidharma said: This well water is enough for you to eat for many days.After saying that, he went down the mountain again.

After Bodhidharma went down the mountain, Juexing scooped a bowl of water from the new well and took a sip, then spit out, stretched his tongue and screamed: Oh, it's so spicy, but Huike had no words, and he ate the water from the spicy well as usual.When Juexing saw him, he had to eat with him.

After another seventy-nine and sixty-three days, the water in the spicy well was also eaten dry.Zen Master Bodhidharma came up the mountain again for the third time.Bodhidharma asked: What does the water taste in this well? Juexing said: It was very spicy. Bodhidharma asked Huike again: Is it really spicy? Huike said: It really spicy.Zen Master Bodhidharma said a little dissatisfiedly: Since you already know that water is spicy, why should you eat it? Huike cleverly replied: Spicy (Come )pungent (Heart )，pungent (Heart )hot (Come )，How can I get the spicy water if I don’t eat spicy water? When Bodhidharma heard Huike’s answer, he became happy again.Without saying a word, he went out and drilled another well, and then went down the mountain.

Huike and Juexing thought to themselves: The water in the first two wells is bitter and spicy, but I don’t know what the water in this well tastes! Sure enough, cooking with the water in this well tastes very sour.Juexing said: Master, my master cares about us very much, but he has laid three wells for us in a row, and no well is sweet.I think he is trying to make things difficult for us! Huike said: You are young and don’t understand.If you don’t endure hardship, you won’t know that sweetness is sweetness;How can you get the most spicy food if you don’t eat spicy well water? Only by eating all the sour well water will you never be a vulgar and sour person.Then, Huike taught Juexing a lesson: Those two times the old Zen master came to ask me, you always answered first without thinking, and you are not allowed to talk nonsense next time.Juexing was scolded and claimed to be.From then on, he no longer talked too much when others talked.

After ninety days of the time, the sour well water was also eaten dry.Bodhidharma was very happy to see it.He entered the house and found that Jueking was the only one who was there, but Huike was not seen, so he asked: Jueking, where is your master? Jueking said: My master is recovering from the arm resting platform! Bodhidharma went out and shouted loudly: Huike Huike heard Bodhidharma shouting and agreed: Alas, I am on the Xuxin Platform.Bodhidharma approached and found that Huike was still meditating on the plain and straight stone, and said: Ah! What a pure demon refining platform! Huike and Juexing heard Bodhidharma say that this stone platform was called the demon refining platform, and thought it was more appropriate than the name he called, so from then on, he also changed the stone to the demon refining platform.

After the master and disciple returned to the Cao'an, Bodhidharma took off the robes on Huike's left arm with his own hands. Seeing that the wound had healed and scabbed, he said: Huike! Your arm wound is almost healed, and the demonic energy on your body is almost refining. Although the disaster of a hundred days is not long, you have tasted the bitterness, sweetness and sourness of the world. You have not disappointed the expectations of the Buddha's Zen Buddhism. I have designated you as the heir of the Buddha's Zen Buddhism. Now I will give you the magic weapon.As he said that, he took out a large red sandalwood bowl from his arms and handed it to Zi Huike, and then instructed: Huike, your 100-day disaster period has not yet ended, so you must start and end well! Huike replied: Master, don’t worry, disciples must stick to the whole story.When Bodhidharma left, he asked again: The water in the three wells is dry, what water do you eat in the remaining few days? Huike said: Please give me another hole in the well, Master.Bodhidharma pierced the Zen stick to the ground, and the sweet clear spring emerged from the ground.He said: The bitterness is over and sweet, you two go back and take a look, and the water in the three wells has become sweet water.Juexing ran to taste it, and it turned out that the water in the four wells was really sweet.Later generations called these four wells Zhuoxiquan.

The Cao'an where Huike lives was later converted into a temple and was called the Erzu's Temple.
