Why do great monks and great masters occasionally show serious illness

ask:The disciples of the Three Jewels ask the monk to teach you that the monks or monks spread the Dharma and benefit sentient beings every day, and they have immeasurable merits, and they should only have merits and no karma!Usually it is the health of the Dharma body, why do you occasionally show serious illness?Thank you mage!

Master Honghai replied:This fellow practitioner is really interesting. You have said that he is seriously ill, so there should be no doubts. Of course, this is just one level.First of all, let’s understand. Let’s start from the beginning. This issue is indeed very important. At critical moments, it will affect our faith in Buddhism and even the Three Jewels. First of all, let’s talk about why people get sick. If we simply look at the perspective of ordinary people, the disease and karma of people is always one of the four major irregularities. The reason for it is sometimes illness, which is the four major irregularities of the body.Sometimes it is karma disease, which is caused by past evil karma, or the past cause and effect have matured, so you have to suffer.

So from this point of view, the first thing we need to understand is that Buddhism talks about the mind, our body is dominated by the four elements, and it is impermanent.Since it is impermanent, it may be uncontrollable anytime and anywhere. This is very normal. Therefore, at this level, we cannot just look at whether the monk has a Tao or a monk or not. This is an incorrect knowledge and view in itself.Secondly, that is, there is another question of intention.Especially in our era, everyone has many problems, heavy troubles, and many karma. In this case, when a monk or a monk leads the people to practice, of course, we should not say that some monks have such merits, so we don’t say that they are on behalf of their karma, and they bear the karma for sentient beings, because some are indeed caused by causes and conditions or are they borne by themselves.

In general, sometimes he is in order to protect the teachings, spread the Dharma, and lead everyone to practice, so he cannot take too much into consideration in this body. For everyone, he can take this kind of effort to not seek happiness for himself and hope that sentient beings will benefit. So, from this perspective, such a body is not good, which is itself a manifestation of merit. It is to forget the body for the Dharma, and to emphasize the Dharma and neglect the body. This is from the perspective of ordinary people. Then again, from the perspective of Mahayana Buddhism and from the perspective of faith, we must know that the manifestation of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will also get sick.Because, I wonder if you have read the Vimalakirti Sutra: Because sentient beings are sick, I am sick. It is a manifestation.Since it has been shown to our country, all the food, drink, defecation, sensation, birth, old age, sickness and death must be synchronized with us, otherwise he will be the true body, not the response. Therefore, from this point of view, including Sakyamuni Buddha, he also appeared as an 80-year-old monk. When he finally passed away from the twin trees, although he knew that the time had arrived and went to the holy land of Nirvana step by step, in his appearance, he still had diarrhea because he ate the things offered by others, had diarrhea, was in poor health, and was sick, so he insisted on going there and finally died. This manifestation was like this.

From this point of view, it is normal to get sick. And the Buddha also said in the scriptures, what do you say, why is this monk in poor health? Because he is not close to the decoction, that is, no matter whether you are an ordinary monk or a holy monk, you will get sick. This is a natural thing, depending on everyone's cause and condition. In short, especially in our era, from an ordinary monk's perspective, I think he must be an ordinary person, so he will get sick and cannot escape from impermanence.Even if he attains eternal happiness and self-purity, he will still appear in the land of eternal silence and light, and the Pure Land. Therefore, in our eyes and vision, because we are also ordinary people, when we see him sick, they all show the world that our ideal mind appears from his sick body.Another thing is that if everyone is an ordinary person, the master is just a guide. He is a monk in terms of fate, then he is a professional in practice, and he is a leader in his identity. Then we are all on the road of practice, just walking together, and having a relationship between the front and back.So in this regard, this disease is normal, especially if you treat it as a success or a karma. Of course, when a disease appears, it must be related to the cause and effect karma before and after. But when we cultivate our mind, it depends on how our mind changes. When many great masters finally go through the emergency, what does he show? Because he is about to turn into a saint, he must eliminate all the karma of his ordinary stage, and this time will also be reflected in the emergence of illness and suffering, which is another situation.

In short, whether from the perspective of ordinary monks or holy monks, everyone must understand this correctly. How to correctly understand? That is to say, being sick does not mean whether he has the intention to practice, whether he is a monk, or whether he has the Tao.If a true practitioner can cultivate the Tao through illness and karma, wouldn’t he be even more eminent?Furthermore, sometimes we go back to the knowledge and views we mentioned at the beginning, and sometimes our beliefs seem to be less pure. In which aspect, we seem to have a cleanliness obsession. That is to say, it is incorrect to regard a master like us in a stained soil as the Buddha and Bodhisattva themselves and the true body to synchronize. Therefore, all kinds of causes and signs show that it is normal for monks or monks to get sick and are still practicing. What about this question? This is the response to Amitabha!
